Getting Your First Tattoo: What to Expect (Complete Guide)
Updated March 2026 · 7 min read
Getting your first tattoo is exciting and nerve-wracking. Here's everything you need to know to prepare.
Choosing Placement
For first tattoos, avoid the most painful spots: ribs, spine, hands, feet, neck, and inner elbows. Good spots for beginners: outer arm, shoulder, calf, and upper back.
Managing Pain
Pain is real but manageable. Most people describe it as a scratching or burning sensation. Bony areas and areas with thin skin hurt more. Take breaks if needed — most artists expect this.
Before Your Session
- Eat a full meal 1–2 hours before — low blood sugar makes pain worse
- Stay hydrated
- Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before (thins blood)
- Moisturize the skin in the days leading up to your session
- Wear loose clothing that gives easy access to the tattoo area
During the Session
Breathe steadily, avoid tensing up, and communicate with your artist if you need a break. Bring water and a snack for longer sessions. Bring headphones and something to distract yourself.
Tipping
Tip 15–25% of the session cost. If the artist spent extra time perfecting your design, tip on the higher end. Cash is always appreciated.
