How to Choose a Tattoo Shop: What to Look For in 2026
Updated March 2026 · 7 min read
Choosing the right tattoo shop is as important as choosing the design itself. Here's what to look for.
Check the Portfolio
Every artist should have an online portfolio (Instagram, website). Look specifically for examples of the style you want — not just their overall work. An artist who specializes in realism may not be the best choice for watercolor.
Evaluate Hygiene and Setup
When you visit the shop in person: surfaces should be clean, single-use needles should be in sealed packaging, and the artist should glove up in front of you. Ask if they use an autoclave for sterilizing equipment.
Request a Consultation
Reputable artists offer free consultations before booking. Use this to discuss your design, placement, sizing, and get a price estimate. A good artist will also tell you if your idea isn't feasible — that's a green flag, not a red one.
Red Flags to Avoid
- No portfolio or photos of actual work
- Pressure to book immediately without a consultation
- Unusually low prices (often means cutting corners on safety)
- Dirty or cluttered workspace
- Artists who claim they can do every style perfectly
