Tattoo Aftercare Guide: How to Heal Your Tattoo Properly
Updated March 2026 · 7 min read
Proper aftercare determines how well your tattoo heals and how vibrant it stays long-term. Follow these steps.
First 24 Hours
Keep the wrap on for 2–4 hours (or as directed by your artist). After removing, gently wash with mild unscented soap and warm water. Pat dry with a clean paper towel. Apply a thin layer of unscented lotion or artist-recommended aftercare balm.
Days 2–14: The Healing Phase
- Wash 2–3 times daily with gentle soap
- Apply a thin layer of moisturizer after each wash
- Expect peeling and itching — do not pick or scratch
- Avoid soaking in baths, pools, or ocean for 2–3 weeks
- Keep out of direct sunlight
- Wear loose, breathable clothing over the tattoo
Long-Term Care
After healing, keep your tattoo moisturized and protected with SPF 50+ when exposed to sun. UV exposure is the #1 cause of tattoo fading.
