Tattoo Pain Chart & Management: What to Expect
Updated March 2026 · 8 min read
Pain tolerance varies, but certain placements hurt more than others due to proximity to bone, nerve density, and skin thickness. This guide ranks body parts by pain level and covers management strategies.
Low Pain Areas
- Outer shoulder: Thick skin, muscle cushion
- Outer bicep: Same reasons as shoulder
- Outer thigh: Good fat/muscle padding
- Calf: Muscle cushion, less nerve density
Medium Pain Areas
- Forearm
- Upper back
- Chest (away from sternum)
- Hip
High Pain Areas
- Ribs: Close to bone, frequent breathing movement
- Sternum: Bone right under skin
- Spine: Nerve central, bone proximity
- Elbow/knee: Thin skin, bone, joint movement
- Hands/feet: High nerve density, thin skin
- Armpit/groin: Thin, sensitive skin
Pain Management Tips
- Eat a full meal 1–2 hours before
- Stay hydrated
- Get good sleep the night before
- Avoid alcohol 24 hours prior (thins blood)
- Bring snacks for longer sessions
- Take breaks when needed — artists expect this
- Breathing exercises help (slow, deep breaths)
Numbing Cream: Worth It?
Topical numbing creams (lidocaine-based) can reduce pain but have downsides: they change skin texture slightly, may affect ink saturation, and wear off after 1–2 hours. Many artists discourage them. For short sessions (under 3 hours), most people don't need them.
